MIXED MEDIA PRINTMAKING

  FLORENCE, ITALY

with instructor RON POKRASSO

SANTA REPARATA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL of ART

May 4-17, 2018

The May 4-17, 2018 program is filled. Please contact me to be placed on a waiting list or to be added to the list for the 2020 program.

This spectacular two week program offers the opportunity to live and create in Florence, Italy, a cultural capital of Europe. As the home of the Renaissance and the birthplace of the modern world, Florentines championed democracy, science, literature as well as painting, sculpture, and architecture. The Tuscan countryside offers rolling landscapes, pastoral farms, vineyards, and medieval towns clinging to the hills.

Santa Reparata International School of Art  (SRISA) is a fantastic facility to use as a home base with all that is needed to experiment and evolve in the creative process of image making. The large printmaking area has four intaglio presses, two exposure units, a dark room dedicated to printmaking, and plenty of lockers and flat files for workshop participants. The digital lab is well equipped with a scanner, printer, and Apple computers. SRISA is located in the heart of Florence within a short walking distance to just about everything - the Duomo, the Uffizi Museum, the Accademia, the Mercato Centrale, Santa Croce, and dozens of fabulous restaurants.

COURSE OFFERING

Monotype, Collage, and ImageOn/Solarplate

This workshop focuses on mixed media printmaking. Using Akua non-toxic water-based inks, participants of all levels will learn monotype through various methods of mixing, modifying, layering inks, using and abusing mark-making tools, and exploring the limits of paper. Instruction beginning at 9am on May 4 will include a wide range of uses for chine colle, collage, and drawing. ImagOn and Solarplate will be taught, both as means in themselves and integrated with other techniques. Photoshop will be introduced to help artists learn the basics of photo digital imaging and how to apply it to Imagon, Solarplate, and collage. Multi-plate printing methods will open the door to just about any combination of traditional printmaking forms.

The emphasis is on the “Artist as an Inventor,” and each participant is encouraged to stretch his or her methods of expressing and breaking barriers into new and uncharted territory. The information presented is cumulative, and participants will have the opportunity to revisit works developed over the course of two weeks. The workshop will culminate on May 17 with an informal critique and discussion to serve as closure and celebration on the final day of class. If you have any questions regarding this course please contact Ron Pokrasso, pokrasso@gmail.com or have a look at his website, www.ronpokrasso.com.

For the 2018 course we will also have the services of full time assistant Rachel Heberling. Rachel is the Studio Director of Frontline Arts (formerly the Printmaking Center of New Jersey). She is well versed in all the techniques we will be covering and is a pleasure to work with.

HOUSING

SRISA may arrange some of the housing. There is one option remaining through the school:
Student housing is no longer available through SRISA for the 2018 program

Student housing, generally used by college students in semester programs, is modest – nothing fancy here (you bring your own linens and towels). These are all within a 15 minute walk to the workshop. Most of these apartments have a living area and kitchen facilities. The price per person for a double room in a shared apartment is $695 or for a single room in a shared apartment is $895. This is inclusive of all fees although a $250 damage deposit will be held until after your departure. SRISA
apartments are available only for the duration of the workshop, check in May 2 or 3 and check out May 18.

Other apartments are available through SRISA and the rental price will vary widely from apartment to apartment depending on what the participant requests. Most of these are for two or more people. A nice one bedroom apartment for the two weeks runs from $1500-3000.

In addition Residenza apartments right across the street from the workshop have been reserved for workshop participants. These are lovely apartments that vary in size, and can accommodate 2-4 people. Our discounted price includes one professional cleaning with a change of linens at the mid-point. You can view these apartments by visiting www.residenzasangallo.com (double rooms can be made up with twin beds).  Our rates for these apartments are listed per night with an option to check in well before the program begins and to extend your stay after the program.
(Note: prices for Residenza San Gallo housing are in Euros € and an additional €1.50 per person tourism tax will be charged for the first 7 nights)

All Residenza apartments are currently filled for the May 2018 program

Apartment il Cortile -1 bedroom- already taken
Apartment il Cenacolo -1 bedroom, 2-3 people- already taken
Apartment Beato Angelico -2 bedrooms - already taken
Apartment San Marco - 2 bedrooms - already taken
Apartment Belvedere - 2 bedrooms - already taken
Ideally we would like for single workshop participants to share these apartments. If you would like to be matched with a roommate please contact me for assistance. If not, you can just let me know which apartment you prefer and I will notify the proprietor that you will be contacting her directly to make an arrangement. I ask that you provide your tuition deposit prior to securing an apartment.

You may also choose to arrange your own housing. There are many websites that cater to rentals in Florence. Check out http://www.apartments-florence-italy.com and https://www.airbnb.com/.

TRAVEL

Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Florence. It is a good idea to make plans to arrive a few days before the beginning of the program to help acclimate to the culture and time difference. Unless other arrangements have been made, housing options are available for check in one or two days before the beginning of the program
